Mountains Melt Like Wax

14th July

The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.

Psalm 97:5

What are mountains before God? If you try to imagine that God is out of our idea of time and out of our scale of thinking, mountains are like nothing to Him. Yet to us, His created children, they are huge. It is almost like our view from the top of a very tall mountain. Everything below seems so small. Yet it is only from the top of the mountain that we get that perspective. When we are at the bottom, the scale of sizes switch perspective. For from the bottom of the mountain, everything looks so big.

Sometimes we really need to re-align our image and perspective of how big God is, to the truth and not the lies that society and problems decrease Him to. If God is that big, imagine how small (yet not insignificant) our needs and problems are. Furthermore, considering the sheer greatness of God and the minuteness of us, isn’t it amazing that He calls us by name and knows the very hairs on our head. Isn’t incredible that He hears our cries and captures our tears in a bottle. Isn’t unfathomable that He would send His only Son for our sakes. That is the God we serve. No matter how big your worries or problems are, know that God is always bigger.

God Is Incredible

24th September

“You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you.”

Nehemiah 9:6

Yesterday I visited the largest aquarium in the world. It is found on the beautiful island of Okinawa. It was spectacular. The main viewing gallery boasts an enormous water tank that holds some of the biggest fish I ever saw in my life. From majestic sting-rays (bigger than a car), to huge sharks, tunas and of course whales (the size of buses).

When I saw these incredible fish, I was truly speechless. It not only reminded me of how amazing God is to have designed so many types, colours and species of fish, but the sheer size of them reminded me how big God is. It is only when things are put into perspective in our eyes than we can begin to start to fathom how much bigger God is than us.

When you are flying in an aeroplane and look down on the earth, humanity just seems like a spec. In space, islands seem likes a spec. In God’s universe, earth seems like a spec. Yet God is even out of time and space itself. To God, even the universe is like a spec. Yet incredibly, He chose to make human’s in His likeness and chose to sacrifice His only Son for our sakes.

We may be physically small, but to God we priceless. We are His. We are created to worship Him and give Him the glory and honour He deserves.

A Mere Speck

18th June

The Lord is KING. Let the earth rejoice! Let the farthest coastlands be glad…The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.”

Psalm 97:1,5

It has been said that Mountain’s make up 70% of Japan’s land mass. Everywhere you travel to around this island, you probably are not far from a huge mountain range. These mountains and are not glorified hills but huge tall mountains, 2000 or 3000 meters tall. They bask in the sun’s glory in the summer and decorated with snow in the winter.

Yet in all of the glory, they still are nothing compared to the enormity of Almighty God. A human standing next to or even attempting to climb one of these mountains, has to pale into sheer humility at the size contrast. But compared to God, even these mountains are minute. Even if we could compare the earth to God’s greatness it would still be a “mere speck” if His eyes. Our planet is just one of millions of stars and planets in the thousands of solar systems in the known universe. David, in today’s Psalm, also comments on the greatness of God and how even these mighty mountains melt like wax before the Lord’s Majesty. The whole earth sings of God’s greatness.

Today, let us put our problems into perspective. God is far far greater than any of our problems. Seriously nothing is too big for Him. Nothing surprises Him, nothing scares Him and nothing makes Him worry. The best part is, is that God cares for you individually. He cares for us all individually. He knows every single hurt, pain, disappointment, financial need, and family need and HE CARES. Even if He is so much higher, bigger and greater, He still cares personally for each of us. God doesn’t look at our problems, even if they are small for Him and dismiss them. Rather He is there fighting with us, walking by our side and holding our hands through the darkest valleys, fighting to make a way out.

If you are waking up to a whole heap of problems this morning, put you life into the perspective of God’s eyes and know that He is with you. God, the creator of everything in the entire universe, is on your side.
