““You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for Him.’ It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the best man is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at His success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.””
John 4:28-30
John the Baptist was a good man. More than that, he was a messenger of Jesus; a light shining to show the world that Jesus was the awaited Lamb of God, the One to take away the sins of the world. It must have been hard for John, however, to deflect the focus he was getting, and instead point to Jesus. Many people heard John’s teachings and were amazed by his words. Moreover, many people were baptised by John. Yet time and time again, John passionately declared himself a simple messenger to prepare the way for the main event: Jesus Christ.
John understood who he was, but more importantly, he understood who Jesus was. We too are challenged to be beacons and lights pointing to who Jesus is, through our words, deeds, lifestyles and actions. Yet in order for that to happen, we need to become less and He needs to become greater. That is not to say we must talk ourselves down, but rather we must lift HIM up. Let us not try to steal the limelight from the bridegroom but be glad to make the bridegroom the main event.
